Gift Guide Day 9: A Luxury Balm for your Lips (and Beyond!)

GG 2015-9

With the colder temperatures (and the mistletoe), a great lip balm is a must.  Today’s gift, Henné Organics Luxury Organic Lip Balm, is not only an amazing (trust me!) lip product, it can also be used for hands, elbows, heels, and more!  Made with coconut oil, shea butter, avocado oil, and beeswax, it’s certified organic and contains 99% organic ingredients.  It’s long lasting, non-greasy, and feels light-weight on your lips or skin.  This product is a luxe gift that anyone will enjoy, and because it’s colourless, it’s great for men, too!  You can purchase this product online (free shipping on orders $75+) or in-store at Blossom Lounge in Toronto’s Distillery District.

January/February Favourites!

Jan-Feb 2015 Faves

I can barely fathom that it’s already March…where did January and February go?!  Wherever it went, it did leave me with some awesome new favourites to share with you.  Let’s get started!

1. American Eagle AEO Soft & Sexy Jegging V-Neck T-Shirt

I know what you’re thinking: Elyse, a t-shirt is a t-shirt.  But trust me, these shirts are perfection.  Part of AE’s new collection, these tees are the perfect length, are extremely soft and silky, are tagless, and come out good-as-new when washing.  I purchased my v-neck in black, (they are available in other colours), and the “Soft & Sexy” line also includes other styles (muscle tees, baseball tees, zip ups, and more!).

2. Arm & Hammer Pro Sensitive Whitening Toothpaste

For me, a good toothpaste is hard to find.  Sometimes I don’t like the texture, sometimes I don’t care for the taste, and sometimes I’m just not happy with the results. But for me, this toothpaste has it all: sensitivity protection, whitening, and a great “clean” feeling after you use it.  I’m especially impressed with its whitening ability, and noticed a significant difference after just a few days of use.

3. Tetley Chai Tea

I tried this tea after I found it in my pantry on a day when my go-to, Orange Pekoe, had run out.  When it comes to home-brewed tea, this is definitely one of my new front-runners.  A combination of, “cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, star anise and cloves”, I find it to be extremely smooth tasting and aromatic (just smelling it calms me down at the end of the day).

4. MAC Cosmetics Lip Pencil in “Hip ‘n’ Happy”

Lip pencils have become one of my favourite beauty products as of late (check out my Valentine’s day post here).  I was introduced to this MAC classic when I went to pick up the new Viva Glam Miley Cyrus Lipstick and Tinted Lipglass.  The makeup artist at the MAC counter was wearing a gorgeous colour on her lips, and she informed me that it was actually this lip pencil underneath the Miley lipglass.  She had received so many compliments on her lip combo, that her store at the mall (and the MAC counter in The Bay) were all sold out.  So, three MAC counters later, I now own and love this lip pencil.  Wear it on its own, with a lipstick, or under a gloss.  Any which way, you’re sure to love it too!

5. Aldo Accessories “Olaoviel” Necklace

Aldo Accessories is one of my favourite stores, and I frequent it often to check out their sale section (usually buy one, get one free).  This fun statement necklace, made of multifaceted black rings woven into braided black fabric, is perfect for jazzing up the neckline of a simple crew neck tee (or LBD).

6. Aveeno Fresh Essentials Daily Exfoliating Scrub

I’ve already raved about this product in my previous post: a review of the Aveeno Fresh Essentials line.  So to summarize, this scrub: a) smells amazing, b) feels awesome on your skin, and c) works like a charm.  Highly recommend!

Flower Beauty can now be found in Canada! Sold exclusively at Wal-Mart, Flower Beauty is Drew Barrymore‘s cosmetic line.  Drew’s philosophy is that department-store-quality beauty products should not cost you an arm and a leg, and Flower does this by forgoing any advertising costs.  All products are made in the USA, and are not tested on animals.  Today’s gift is their “Color in the Lines Mini Lip Chubby Beauty Set“, which comes with 3 of their most popular Lip Suede Velvet Lip Chubbies, and can be purchased at Wal-Mart in Canada for $9.00 (or $9.88 in the US).  These lip chubbies have great colour payoff, are self-sharpening, and will fit perfectly in a purse or clutch.  This set is a great way to introduce a friend (or yourself) to a cosmetic line that is sure to have great success in Canada.  They’re also the perfect stocking stuffer!

Spotted: NYX Butter Glosses are finally in Canada!

NYX Butter Gloss

I originally received one of these highly-coveted lip glosses in an American monthly subscription box, and, like a kid at Christmas, waited patiently for them to be released in Canada so I could add to my collection.  Yesterday while walking through Target, I thought I’d do my usual “Butter Gloss” check in the NYX section, and could barely believe my eyes when they were actually there (embarrassingly, I gasped loud enough that someone else came over to see what was so impressive).  And, let me tell you, when it comes to these glosses, impressive is an understatement (even Oprah thinks so!).  A smooth, creamy texture, this gloss provides sheer-to-medium pigmentation and coverage, and feels more like a moisturizing lip balm than your average sticky lip gloss.  You can also pair it over your favourite lipstick.

At my local Target, these glosses were selling for $7.99, and in my opinion, are worth every penny.  Pictured above (left to right) are: Creme Brulee, Vanilla Cream Pie, Sugar Cookie, Red Velvet, and Meringue (I also own and love Apple Strudel, a pretty peach tone).  You can check out all the gorgeous colours on the NYX website here, and then run (or drive) to your local Target before their gone!

Beauty in the Nude: My Favourite Neutral-Toned Products

Nude

As much as I love getting dressed up every now and then (fake lashes, contouring, the whole nine yards), there are times when looking like your headed to prom isn’t really appropriate, or necessary.  Below are some of my favourite neutral-toned products for those days when you want that ethereal “no makeup, but yes I’m wearing makeup” glow.  Some of these products are drugstore purchases, others are higher priced items.  Click the links below to buy the products online.  A certain product not in your budget this month? No worries, just use it as inspiration to find similar products on your own, or send me an email/leave me a message below and I’ll do the work for you!

1. Revlon Color Stay Nude Expressions Nail Polish in “Nude Beige” (Limited Edition)

When it comes to nail polish, I tend to lean more towards unique, vibrant colours (like this one I blogged about recently).  However, as soon as I applied this nude polish, I fell in love.  The colour complimented my skin tone perfectly, applied beautifully, and lasted for days.  No need to layer 5 coats to achieve colour-payoff, I only needed two to obtain a perfect, even hue.

2. Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist Natural Lipstick in “N4”

A good nude lipstick is hard to find.  They’re either too pink, too brown, or leave you looking like you have no lips (not cute).  Make Up For Ever’s Rouge Artist Natural line is full of beautiful neutral tones, including my personal favorite “N4, Pink Beige”.  Wear it alone for a creamy finish, or layer it under a pink or brown gloss (like the one below) for an extra shiny finish.

3. Bath and Body Works Liplicious Lip Gloss in “Amazon Coconut”

Introduced as part of their Summer collection, this gloss is not currently available to purchase online (though I did see some fairly recently in-store).  This gloss is a bronzy-gold tone, that applies sheer and smells like heaven (aka: coconut).  My personal favourite pairing is with the lipstick above, but it looks great on it’s own too.  Fingers crossed that Bath and Body Works brings it back again this Summer!

4. Nars Bronzing Powder in “Laguna”

Not shimmery, not too dark, and not too thick: all these things make this bronzer my daily go-to.  It creates a believable “I just got back from the Bahamas” glow, and is finely milled so it won’t cake when applied over your foundation.  I’ve yet to find a bronzer that I love as much as this one.

5. Covergirl Bombshell Shine Eye Shadow in “Copper Fling” and “Gold Goddess”

Newly released, these creamy, highly pigmented shadows work great as a base underneath other shadows, or on their own.  As someone who has oily skin, I didn’t have any issues with creasing or melting, and the shine lasted the whole day.  What’s great about these shadows is that they can be applied thicker for a rich, shiny finish, or applied with a lighter hand for a more subtle, shimmery look.  Other colours from this collection on my wishlist? “Ooh La Lilac” and “Platinum Club”.

6. Smashbox Fusion Soft Lights in “Baked Starburst”

This pinwheel style blush is not only pretty, it’s also a serious multi-tasker.  Wear all shades together for a pretty, neutral, luminescent blush, or wear each shade individually as eye shadow, highlighter, or mix with a gloss to create a custom lip colour.  Because it can do so much, it’s also great for travelling!

7. Urban Decay Naked Palettes (1, 2, 3, and Basics)

All or any of these pallets are an amazing addition to your makeup collection.  The shadows are highly pigmented, apply smoothly, and blend easily.

The original Naked palette is a collection of matte and shimmery bronzed-toned shadows (some of my favourites: “Buck”, “Naked”, and “Half Baked”).

Naked1

The Naked 2 palette is a collection of matte and shimmery taupe-toned shadows (some of my favourites: “Busted”, “YDK” and “Foxy”).

Naked2

The newly released Naked 3 palette is a collection of matte and shimmery pink-toned shadows (some of my favourites: “Nooner”, “Factory”, and “Blackheart”).

Naked3

Lastly, the Naked Basics palette is a collection of 6 matte, neutral hues (which are perfect for work or every-day).
