January/February Favourites!

Jan-Feb 2015 Faves

I can barely fathom that it’s already March…where did January and February go?!  Wherever it went, it did leave me with some awesome new favourites to share with you.  Let’s get started!

1. American Eagle AEO Soft & Sexy Jegging V-Neck T-Shirt

I know what you’re thinking: Elyse, a t-shirt is a t-shirt.  But trust me, these shirts are perfection.  Part of AE’s new collection, these tees are the perfect length, are extremely soft and silky, are tagless, and come out good-as-new when washing.  I purchased my v-neck in black, (they are available in other colours), and the “Soft & Sexy” line also includes other styles (muscle tees, baseball tees, zip ups, and more!).

2. Arm & Hammer Pro Sensitive Whitening Toothpaste

For me, a good toothpaste is hard to find.  Sometimes I don’t like the texture, sometimes I don’t care for the taste, and sometimes I’m just not happy with the results. But for me, this toothpaste has it all: sensitivity protection, whitening, and a great “clean” feeling after you use it.  I’m especially impressed with its whitening ability, and noticed a significant difference after just a few days of use.

3. Tetley Chai Tea

I tried this tea after I found it in my pantry on a day when my go-to, Orange Pekoe, had run out.  When it comes to home-brewed tea, this is definitely one of my new front-runners.  A combination of, “cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, star anise and cloves”, I find it to be extremely smooth tasting and aromatic (just smelling it calms me down at the end of the day).

4. MAC Cosmetics Lip Pencil in “Hip ‘n’ Happy”

Lip pencils have become one of my favourite beauty products as of late (check out my Valentine’s day post here).  I was introduced to this MAC classic when I went to pick up the new Viva Glam Miley Cyrus Lipstick and Tinted Lipglass.  The makeup artist at the MAC counter was wearing a gorgeous colour on her lips, and she informed me that it was actually this lip pencil underneath the Miley lipglass.  She had received so many compliments on her lip combo, that her store at the mall (and the MAC counter in The Bay) were all sold out.  So, three MAC counters later, I now own and love this lip pencil.  Wear it on its own, with a lipstick, or under a gloss.  Any which way, you’re sure to love it too!

5. Aldo Accessories “Olaoviel” Necklace

Aldo Accessories is one of my favourite stores, and I frequent it often to check out their sale section (usually buy one, get one free).  This fun statement necklace, made of multifaceted black rings woven into braided black fabric, is perfect for jazzing up the neckline of a simple crew neck tee (or LBD).

6. Aveeno Fresh Essentials Daily Exfoliating Scrub

I’ve already raved about this product in my previous post: a review of the Aveeno Fresh Essentials line.  So to summarize, this scrub: a) smells amazing, b) feels awesome on your skin, and c) works like a charm.  Highly recommend!

November/December Favourites

November December Favourites
It’s hard to believe that 2015 is just around the corner (a.k.a: tomorrow).  From smooth skin, to the perfect blowout, to a beautifully scented room, November and December have introduced me to some awesome beauty and fashion items, which are sure to help start the new year off right.  Here we go!

1. Mac Lipstick in “Rebel” $19.00

I had heard great things about this lipstick, and was lucky enough to receive it as a Christmas gift this year.  The colour is perfection and I love the way it changes depending on the amount you apply: a rich purple if applied with a heavier hand, and a pretty pinkish-berry colour if applied thinly.  Long lasting and with a satin finish, this lipstick is surprisingly wearable (don’t be scared by the colour in the tube!).  There’s a reason it’s a Mac best seller (and I now know why)!

2. Living Proof Perfect Hair Day 5-in-1 Styling Treatment $18.00

When it comes to hair care products, I tend to have my tried-and-true: I’m not super adventurous.  I received this product in sample format from Sephora, and decided to give it a try.  To be honest, I wasn’t expecting much: how can one product really make your blow-dried hair look any better?  Well, it turns out it can.  This product is oil and silicone free, so it is weightless and doesn’t look greasy, and my after using it, my hair looked voluminous, polished, and much less frizzy than normal.  Fun fact: after trying and loving Living Proof products, Jennifer Aniston became a co-owner!

3. Scentsy Deluxe Warmer in “Leopard” $36.00

I was recently invited to a Scentsy party, and was excited to purchase my very first warmer.  After debating between 3 warmers, (including the Vintage Teapot and Paris warmers), I decided on the Leopard one.  There are a number of things I love about these warmers, and I use mine nearly every day.  First, they’re safe: no need to worry about an open flame, or forgetting to blow it out.  They’re also effective: one scent cube lasts around 8 hours and really does fill the entire room with fragrance.  Some of my favourite scents?  Satin Sheets, Vanilla Suede, Business Casual (think: a man’s cologne), and Sugar (which smells exactly like Pink Sugar perfume).

4. Tarte Prismatic Eye Color Enhancing Shadow Palette For Rich Brown Eyes $14.00

Initially, this palette was a bit of an impulse-purchase when Sephora had their “extra 20% off sale items” event.  On sale for $17.00 (already a great deal), I purchased this for around $13.60 after the extra 20% off.  The colours in this palette are beautiful: rich, pigmented, and yes, they really do make brown eyes “pop”.  While it is no longer available on the Sephora website, Tarte does offer similar colours if you’re interested in re-creating this palette.  I highly recommend it!

5. Jergens BB Body Perfecting Skin Cream $9.97

I received this product in my Spark Sessions gift bag, and have been using it daily ever since.  In just as little as 5 days, you’ll notice your skin is more hydrated, illuminated, even, and firm.  It applies smoothly, smells great (a mix of floral and musky notes), and comes in two tone-matching formulas: one for light skin tones, and one for medium-deep skin tones.

Here’s to many more fashion and beauty favourites in 2015!

Lash Out: A Mascara for Every Budget

Mascaras for Every Budget

Drugstore, department store, or speciality store, I’ve certainly tried my fair share of mascaras over the years.  In my opinion, mascara is a product that can really make your look: what’s a smoky eye without lush, voluminous lashes?  It’s also an integral part of my “3 step process” for when I don’t have enough time to apply a full face of makeup: 1. apply under-eye concealer, 2. curl lashes and apply mascara,  3. apply tinted lip balm.  Fun fact? Egyptians were the first people to use mascara, where both men and women darkened their lashes in an effort to protect their eyes from the desert sun, and ward off evil spirits (after all, the eyes are the window to one’s soul).  Luckily, the formulation and wear of mascara has changed quite a bit since then (honey, dung, and water were the Egyptian’s concoction), and I’ve put together a list of my top 3 modern-day favourites.  Whether you’re looking to spend a little or a “little-more”, any of the mascaras below are sure to cause bouts of lash-batting and selfie-taking. Ready?

1. Drugstore: L’Oreal Telescopic Clean Definition Mascara $10.00

I originally purchased this product as an impulse-buy at the L’Oreal private sale, and was pleasantly surprised when it turned out to be one of my all-time favourite mascaras.  The thin, comb-like brush separates and coats lashes without clumping, and the fragrance free/ophthalmologist-tested formula is suitable for sensitive eyes and washes off easily at the end of the day.  If you’re looking for extra length, and an extra-wallet friendly deal, definitely give this mascara a try.  Learn more about the L’Oreal Telescopic line here, and purchase it from stores such as Wal-Mart, Target, and Shoppers Drug Mart, or online at well.ca.

2. Department Store: Mac Zoom Lash Mascara $16.00

I’ve been a fan of Mac Cosmetics for a long time.  Their products are of professional quality, and there’s always a great mix of “fun” and practical goodies to try.  One of my go-to repurchases is their Zoom Lash Mascara, which has a fibre-wand that multiplies the look of lashes (while also elongating) and coats them in a shiny, gel-like formula.  One coat is enough, but you can definitely build coats for more drama without worrying about clumping or caking.  If you want lashes to look bolder and thicker, then allow me to introduce you to your new best friend.  Purchase it in-store, or on the Mac website here.

3. Speciality Store: Benefit Cosmetics They’re Real! Mascara $29.00

I can’t help but laugh whenever I wear this mascara and someone asks me if I’m sporting fake lashes; I’m sure Benefit would be happy to hear that the name they chose definitely holds true to their product! The perfect combination of separation, length. and volume make this product worth every penny.  For application, you’ll want to stop after 1 or 2 coats to avoid caking (you really won’t need any more).  If I’m looking to revitalize my lashes before going out at night, I’ll simply re-curl them instead of applying more product.  For removal, you’ll want to use some sort of eye makeup remover (soap and water aren’t enough to wash this beauty away).  If you’re thinking that $29.00 is too much for anyone to spend on a tube of mascara, you’re probably on the same boat that I was before I tried it.  My recommendation is to jump-ship, skip a few daily lattes, search your couch for spare change, and start saving for this holy-grail product.  You’ll thank me later.
